Exporting coal and LNG from the Pacific Northwest is a thing

Here ya go Patrick …

The Oregon Department of State Lands recently issued a permit allowing the Port of Coos Bay to conduct the largest dredging project in an estuary in state history. The permit allows for dredging of the first 1.75 million cubic yards (mcy) of a 5.6-mcy project.

The reason for the massive dredging effort: Coos Bay—a town of about 16,000 people on the remote southern Oregon coast—has been targeted for construction of a coal export terminal and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility.

European natural gas trade

Lots of people searching for info on natural gas trade movements.

Here is the link to the IEA’s interactive map of the Euro gas trade. If you can figure out the difference between a “transmission line” and a “transit line” there is some good information here.

Fukushima kills birds first

In the first major study of the impact of the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years, the researchers, from Japan, the US and Denmark, said their analysis of 14 species of bird common to Fukushima and Chernobyl, the Ukrainian city which suffered a similar nuclear meltdown, showed the effect on abundance is worse in the Japanese disaster zone.

The study, published next week in the journal Environmental Pollution, suggests that its findings demonstrate “an immediate negative consequence of radiation for birds during the main breeding season [of] March [to] July”.

…workers bike-commutes in the American South, according to the Alliance for Biking and Walking. Their 2012 Benchmarking Report based on US Census numbers.

I see that as potential. Lots of it. Just like people (people who generally haven’t thought much about the future of liquid fuels) look at China and see potential for a new dawn of the motoring dream. Bicycle-commuting only has one way to go in much of the US. It’s primarily a cultural thing.

Stupidest idea of the year, so far
